Artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum is associated with an altered temporal pattern of transcription

Sachel Mok, Mallika Imwong, Margaret J Mackinnon, Joan Sim, Ramya Ramadoss, Poravuth Yi, Mayfong Mayxay, Kesinee Chotivanich, Kek-Yee Liong, Bruce Russell, Duong Socheat, Paul N Newton, Nicholas PJ Day, Nicholas J White, Peter R Preiser, François Nosten, Arjen M Dondorp, Zbynek Bozdech BMC Genomics 2011, 12:391 (3 August 2011)

Cambodian plasmodium falciparum parasites resistant to the key antimalarial drug artemisinin show decreased metabolic activity during the early ring and trophozoite stages and increased protein synthesis at later stages, which may both contribute to the observed resistance.
