Escaping X-inactivation (Xi) causes no measurable increase in transcription level or noise. (a) Male/female (M/F) expression ratios (mean ± standard error of the mean) of each gene escaping Xi in 20 non-gender-specific tissues are shown. No increase in expression levels was observed in females. (b) Correlation of the noise values (log₁₀(CV(%)²)) with gene expression values (log₁₀(abundance)) of X chromosome genes subject to Xi (grey dots) and escaping Xi (black dots) in HeLa cells. No skewed enrichment in expression or fluctuation of genes escaping Xi was observed.
