.reviews

Genome Biology aims to provide review material that readers need in order to assess and evaluate progress in genomic and post-genomic research. Reviews include systematic and substantial coverage of mature subjects, rapid coverage of fast-moving areas, evaluations of progress in specified areas, and critical assessments of emerging technologies. Reviews are usually commissioned, with the editors aiming to ensure coverage of all relevant areas of biology and genomics but suggestions of reviews are welcome.

RNA polymerase II stalling: loading at the start prepares genes for a sprint

Review
Jia Qian Wu, Michael Snyder
(2 May 2008)

Promoter-proximal polymerase II stalling prepares genes for prompt expression when signals are received.

The AAA+ superfamily of functionally diverse proteins

Review
Jamie Snider, Guillaume Thibault, Walid A Houry
(30 April 2008)

The AAA+ superfamily is a large superfamily of ATPases that are characterized by a conserved catalytic module, the AAA+ module. Members are involved in an astonishing range of different cellular processes.

Genetic determinants of phenotypic diversity in humans

Review
Nazli G Rahim, Olivier Harismendy, Eric J Topol, Kelly A Frazer
(24 April 2008)

New techniques are enabling the identification of genetic variants underlying complex diseases and phenotypic traits.

Innate recognition of non-self nucleic acids

Review
Hongbo Chi, Richard A Flavell
(10 March 2008)

A variety of innate immune system receptors recognize and respond to the nucleic acids of invading pathogens.

No evidence of a Neanderthal contribution to modern human diversity

Review
Jason A Hodgson, Todd R Disotell
(18 February 2008)

Recent studies of genomic DNA from Neanderthal fossils support earlier studies showing no contribution of Neanderthals to the gene pool of modern humans.

Anchoring the genome

Review
Diego Ottaviani, Elliott Lever, Petros Takousis, Denise Sheer
(22 January 2008)

Specific attachment of chromosomal sites to the nuclear matrix is crucial to the control of transcription and DNA replication.
